The opening quarter of an hour was uneventful to say the least, but it came to life in the 16th minute when a swift break by Penicuik saw McPartlin outpace the Pumpherston defence only to see his shot beat keeper Hunter, but come back of the base of the post and cleared. Penicuik then had a series of corner kicks which were well defended by the Pumpherston defence, but the third corner saw a Lister header net bound, but Hunter just got finger tips to the ball to turn it away for yet another corner. From the corner, Miller was picked out by Lister, but from inside the six yard box, he failed to convert a golden opportunity. Then a Gay free kick was headed by Miller on to the crossbar, and his second header off the rebound was superbly saved by Hunter. One minute later, a McPartlin header flashed over the crossbar. The pressure finally told on Pumpherston when, following successive corners, YOUNG rose above the defence to knock the ball home. Then Brigain came close with a 25 yard left foot strike. Penicuik continued with relentless pressure, but it took until the 45th minute before they got a deserved second goal. A Harris corner kick from the right was headed home by MEIKLE.
HALFTIME | Pumpherston 0-2 Penicuik Athletic
Eight minutes into the second half, and the game was put to bed when YOUNG headed home his second for Penicuik off a Harris cross. Penicuik were comfortably in control of the game and only some last gasp defending prevented the visitors adding to the scoreline. In the 70th minute, Gay was denied by a great block by Pumpherston’s Young and the rebound was picked up by Harris, but his strioke was b deflected away by Martin. In the 78th minute, consecutive corners to Penicuik caused mayhem in the Pumpherston defence, but all credit to them as they battled to block everything that Penicuik could throw at them. In the final minute, a quick break from defence saw a great diagonal pass catch out the Penicuik defence who were claiming offside. However, for the first time in the game Penicuik keeper Hill was called into action and he got down well to his left to save.
