Penicuik started their defence of the Conservatory Convertors Fife & Lothian Cup against the team they beat at the quarter final stage last season and eventually did it in style. The crowd were served up a ten goal thriller as the visitors went ahead through MCPHIE in the 10th minute when Bald’s kick out fell to him inside the home half and he fed Ireland at the edge of the box before collecting the return pass and shooting past Bald. It took the home side seven minutes to get back on level terms as Jancyzk’s corner was head goal ward by Somerville and fell to FORBES who turned the ball into the back of the net.A minute later and the Saints restored their lead as Buchan’s pass released HENDRY to race into the box and coolly chip the onrushing Bald. It was the home side who drew level in the 23rd minute as debutant CONNOLLY fired home from 12 yards on the angle as he picked up Noble’s cross after Sproule’s jinking run. Penicuik took the lead for the first time in the match on 25 minutes when Sproule’s corner was deflected by Young into the path of FORBES who netted from close range.
HALFTIME | Penicuik Athletic 3-2 St Andrews United
Penicuik’s half time lead only lasted seven minutes as Hume was adjudged to have handled on the deck and despite the protestations of Young who saw yellow SCHIAVONE stepped up and beat the despairing dive of Bald. The holders responded and Forbes in space on the right swung over an inch perfect cross which was met by LOUGH who headed into the corner of the net with 56 minutes gone. The home side were now well on top and creating chances with waves of attacks and it was no surprise when they went further in front four minutes later as Jancyzk intercepted a Saints pass near the centre circle and drove towards the box where he fed LOUGH who shot home with his right foot from 12 yards out.The game was over in the 70th minute when Hume’s persistence saw Barr released on the right and his cross was only partially cleared to the edge of the 18-yard box where MONTGOMERY thundered home a volley. With eight minutes’ left on the clock a superb Jancyzk pass from deep inside his own half picked out Stephen SCOTT on the run and he outpaced his marker to slot into the corner of the net to complete the scoring.
FULLTIME | Penicuik Athletic 7-3 St Andrews United
