In the opening minutes, Young set Montgomery free on the left and Somerville attempted an overhead kick off the cross, but his effort went high over the bar. In the 8th minute, a twenty five yard strike by Jones was comfortably saved by keeper McArthur. Immediately afterwards a driving run and shot by the same player was again saved by McArthur. Then a corner to Livingston wasn headed over the bar by Forbes. In the 22nd minute, Livingston’s McLean got round the back of the Penicuik defence only for Allison to deny the striker with an excellent save. The ball was quickly cleared from defence and SOMERVILLE outpaced the defence, rounded McArthur and slotted home. Two minutes later a MacDonald cross was headed just wide of goal by Hamilton. At the other end Full back Russell set up McLean but he squandered a great opportunity, blasting the ball high over the bar. Penicuik doubled their lead in the 29th minute when HUME was in the right spot to tap home off a corner kick. In their next attack, Hume split the visitors defence with a pass that saw keeper McArthur rush from goal to deny Hamilton.
HALFTIME | Penicuik Athletic 2-0 Livingston United
Minutes into the half and McArthur came to the rescue with an excellent save to again deny Hamilton. Then Mendes set up newly signed striker Jamieson, but again McArthur was the hero pulling off another fine save. In the 53rd minute, Mendes again got round the back of the Livingston defence and his low cross into the six yard box was side footed past McArthur by JONES to make the score 3-0. Two minutes later, with Penicuik piling on the pressure, McArthur denied Hamilton once again with a fine save. In the 65th minute Penicuik’s central defender was sent off in controversial circumstances. However this did not set back Penicuik. The defence went to a back three and the attacking pressure was maintained and one minute later, a Mendes cross picked out SOMERVILLE. He chested the ball down and his powerful volley gave McArthur no chance. In the 69th minute, Penicuik won the ball on the left and a clever through ball set up HAMILTON who finally got the better of McArthur to make the score 5-0. Penicuik continued to pile on the pressure despite being down to ten men and in the 81st minute, Jamieson only had McArthur to beat, but again the keeper pulled off a superb one handed save. One minute later, MENDES scored his first goal for Penicuik with a thunderous volley followed up by a spectacular gymnastic celebration. The scoring was completed in the 88th minute when JAMIESON cleverly lobbed McArthur as he rushed from goal.
