Dundonald came to Penicuik looking to revenge the 2-3 defeat they suffered at home three weeks previously and started strongly closing Penicuik down quickly, frustrating Cuikie’s passing game. The first chance fell to the visitors when Nimmo headed a free kick high over the bar. In the 12th minute, another Dundonald free kick taken by Gay was well struck but equally well held by Swain. Then Swain was at full stretch to turn away a powerful Smith strike. However it was Penicuik who opened the scoring in the 32nd minute. Following a corner kick, Tansey hooked the ball back across the six yard box and JONES rose to head home from close range. Then a cross from the right by Forbes was met by Tansey, but his glancing header flashed just wide of the upright. Minutes later, Tansey set McCrory-Irving free but his shot was cleared off the line by Mackie.
HALFTIME | Penicuik Athletic 1-0 Dundonald Bluebell
Dundonald started the second half strongly keeping Penicuik on the back foot and got their reward in the 55th minute when CARGILL was on hand to tap home after good work by Smith. The ‘Bell now had their tails up and ten minutes later, GAY drilled home a free kick from the edge of the box into the bottom right hand corner of the net. This prompted substitutions by the Penicuik management, with Baptie and Stewart coming on for Jones and Watson. Within minutes the substitutions paid off when Stewart was felled in the box by Mackie who received his marching orders and STEVENSON stepped up to despatch the spot kick. The sending off changed the whole dynamic of the game and Penicuik started to dominate, playing some excellent football. Then in the 75th minute, the ball broke to STEVENSON who drove through the Dundonald defence that seemed to part before him like the Red Sea and he drilled the ball past Lennox into the left corner of the net. Nine minutes later, Ponton turned his marker inside out and cut the ball back to BAPTIE to stroke home. At the other end, Swain was again at full stretch to deny Gay. Right on the 90th minute, McCrory-Irving’s diagonal pass picked out Ponton who curled the ball low into the box where substitute SOMERVILLE slotted the ball past the diving Lennox.
FULLTIME | Penicuik Athletic 5-2 Dundonald Bluebell
