Penicuik welcomed Super League opponents Ballingry Rovers for this Fife & Lothians Cup tie. Penicuik were the first to threaten in the 7th minute when McPartlin’s diving header off a McDermott cross went narrowly wide of the target. Six minutes later, Penicuik took the lead when a ROSS strike took a slight deflection to hit the back of the net. However, in the 23rd minute, a mistake by McDermott gave away possession just outside the penalty box. Fleming took advantage to curl in an early cross to the back post where CAMPBELL powered home a header to level the score. On the half hour, a pass by Robertson set up McCulloch who chipped the advancing keeper, but the ball went inches over the bar. Then in the 36th minute, from Penicuik’s first corner of the game, McCULLOCH rose above the Ballingry defence to head home. Again the lead was short lived and six minutes later, a fine solo run by BRYCE saw him leave defenders in his wake and smash the ball past Hill. Immediately afterwards, a powerful Gay free kick was just tipped over the bar by Allison.
HALFTIME | Penicuik Athletic 2-2 Ballingry Rovers
Two minutes into the half and Penicuik failed to defend a Ballingry corner kick and CAMPBELL again headed home in a crowded penalty area. Then another great driving run by Bryce ended with his strike hitting the side netting. Then at the other end, keeper Allison had to be alert to rush from his goal line to deny McCulloch. In Penicuik’s next attack Robertson’s diving header off a Ross cross was well saved by Allison. Penicuik got back on level terms in the 55th minute when a McCULLOCH strike took a deflection off McPartlin and hit the back of the net. Minutes later, Gay set up McCulloch, but Allison pulled off an excellent save to deny the big striker. Penicuik went down to ten men when Robertson received a second yellow card. Despite this Penicuik continued to press and look for the winner and two minutes into injury time, a dangerous Montgomery cross was tipped over by Allison for a corner kick. From the corner, Ballingry were under all sorts of pressure and only a wild two footed tackle on Young cleared the danger and referee Smith blew for full time.
FULLTIME | Penicuik Athletic 3-3 Ballingry Rovers
The resultant penalty shoot-out saw the visitors triumph 2-4 and progress to the next round of the competition.
