In the opening minute a high speculative lob by Lister hit the roof of the Saints net. In the 5th minute McCallum’s diving header was inches away from reaching a Gay cross to the back post. Two minutes later a Gay corner kick was header over the bar by Young. In St Andrews first real attack of the game, a deep cross by Murdoch had keeper Bejaoui back pedalling to tip the ball over the crossbar. Penicuik took the lead in the 17th minute when, following a corner kick, Lister picked out GAY on the left. He took one touch and curled the ball past keeper Wilson into the bottom corner of the net for his first goal of the season. Immediately afterwards, the visitors should have equalised, but Buchan blasted the ball high and wide of the target. Then a free kick to St Andrews was headed narrowly over the bar. However, Penicuik doubled their lead in the 33rd minute when Barr burst through the Saints defence to lay the ball off to SOMERVILLE who coolly stroked the ball into the net. Just before half time St Andrews had a chance, but Brand’s effort went a yard wide of the target.
HALFTIME | Penicuik Athletic 2-0 St Andrews United
Six minutes into the half and a defence splitting pass by Somerville set Gay free on the right, but his first time low cross into the box was just missed by McCallum. Then a St Andrews free kick beat the defensive wall, but Bejaoui was well placed to save comfortably. In the 61st minute the visitors were reduced to ten men when a bad foul by Wedderburn on Somerville led to his dismissal. In the 79th minute, a pass by McCallum should have led to a goal, but Somerville just failed to get a touch on the ball and keeper Wilson gratefully grabbed the ball. Then a Jancyzk cross was headed strongly by Somerville, but Wilson stuck out a boot to clear. Penicuik were now piling on the pressure and in the 83rd minute, a Jancyzk free kick saw Young head the ball back across the goal and SOMERVILLE slotted home from eight yards. With minutes to go, Penicuik almost added a fourth when McCallum’s header was blocked by keeper Wilson.
FULLTIME | Penicuik Athletic 3-0 St Andrews United
