Penicuik were rocked back on their heels when the visitors opened the scoring in forty five seconds through trialist MOWATT after good work by Fraser. Penicuik gradually got over the initial shock and in the 10th minute Lister came close with a first time volley that flashed past the junction of the bar and post. Penicuik equalised in the 15th minute, when McPartlin’s driving run set up HARRIS who steered the ball past keeper Cormack into the net. In the 22nd minute, a quickly taken Penicuik corner kick saw McDermott’s cross into the box headed narrowly past the upright by McCulloch. Minutes later, a neat interchange between Ross and Harris set up McPartlin, but he dragged his shot wide of the target. Then a long ball by Penicuik was held up by Harris who then laid it into the path of Ross whose strike was turned round the post by keeper Cormack. On the half hour, a powerful Harris shot beat the keeper but was inches wide of the goal. At the other end, Fraser again broke up the right wing, sent over a cross to the back post where it was headed down into the six yard box, but booted clear by Cunnison. Just before half time, the hard working Killin blasted the ball over the bar from just outside the penalty area.
HALFTIME | Penicuik Athletic 1-1 Broughty Athletic
Penicuik almost mirrored the visitors first half start when in 55 seconds, Montgomery was set free by McPartlin but was adjudged to be offside. Then confusion in the Penicuik defence between Ross and Cunnison allowed Dignan a snap shot at goal, but fortunately for them he missed the target. Bejaoui was then brought into action to save a shot by Broughty goal scorer Mowatt. However, Penicuik took the lead in the 52nd minute when the tenacious Lister won the ball and laid it off to McCulloch. He shielded the ball well and passed to McPARTLIN who slammed the ball past Cormack and into the net off the post. In the 67th minute, Winter’s free kick beat the Penicuik defensive wall but Bejaoui saved at the second attempt. The big keeper was again brought into the action to tip a header over the bar. However the visitors would not be denied and a Fraser cross from the right wing was headed home by DIGNAN for the equaliser. Immediately afterwards Broughty had keeper Cormack to thank as he turned away a net bound strike by McPartlin. As the game swung from end to end, Cox saw his shot brilliantly saved by Bejaoui. In the final minute, Broughty had a great chance to take all three points, but Timmins’ shot went inches over the crossbar.
