Last season’s East Super League Champions Kelty Hearts were the visitors to Penicuik Park for this third league fixture of the new season. The first chance in the game fell to Kelty but Cargill’s effort went wide. Penicuik came close in 10th minute when Somerville was inches away from heading home a Montgomery cross. Play swung from end to end, but neither side could find the finishing touch. In the 28th minute a gilt edge chance fell to Kelty but Cargill’s shot was brilliantly saved by Bejaoui and the rebound headed narrowly past the upright. Kelty took the lead in the 35th minute when a high ball into the box fell to CURRIE who slotted home from just inside the box. The lead was short lived when two minutes later, Aaron Somerville was set up by Lough and he side footed the ball past the advancing keeper.
HALFTIME | Penicuik Athletic 1-1 Kelty Hearts
Three minutes into the second half and Kelty got the early goal they wanted when CURRIE got his second with a first time volley. The visitors were now in control and it was no surprise therefore that the game was put to bed when CARSTAIRS was on hand to power home a header off a corner kick in the 60th minute. Penicuik made changes that had an immediate impact with McCallum winning headers, holding the ball up well and laying off passes. Lough came close with a hard cross into the box that was tipped away by keeper Allison. Then Somerville saw his shot saved comfortably by the keeper. In the 80th minute, danger man Currie had a great opportunity to get his hat trick, but his effort was deflected away for a corner kick.

Kelty player manager, Tam Courts said “the game was very evenly contested in the first half, but I was disappointed to lose a goal so soon after scoring. After we scored the early goal in the second half it was clear that we were going to go on and win the game and the third goal put the game beyond Penicuik”.
Penicuik manager Craig Meikle said “I am really disappointed because I thought we were well in the game, but to lose the first goal the way we did when I thought our centre half was fouled was disappointing. However we came back well to equalise. The biggest disappointment was the way we failed to win second balls and that’s where the second goal came from.
