Blackburn United came to Penicuik for this 3rd round tie in the Fife & Lothians Cup and with an excellent well drilled display progressed to the next round against Musselburgh Athletic. Penicuik went on the attack from the opening minute and won consecutive corner kicks, but Blackburn defended them comfortably. Then in the 10th minute a long ball over the Penicuik defence had keeper Easton rushing from goal to nip the ball away from McQuillan. Minutes later, a glancing header by McCallum went narrowly wide and a long range effort by McDonald flew high over the bar. On the quarter hour, a Gay free kick picked out the unmarked McCallum, but he side footed the ball wide of the target. Penicuik continued to pile on the pressure and the visitors had keeper King to thank when he denied McCallum with an excellent save. Minutes later, King got low down to his left to stop a Somerville strike. In the 26th minute, Forbes crossed the ball to the back post where McCallum headed for goal, but again, keeper King came to the rescue with another great stop. On the half hour Penicuik had the ball in the net but Gay was ruled offside. Then totally against the run of play, Herriot curled the ball over the Penicuik defence and McQUILLAN took full advantage and drilled the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
HALFTIME | Penicuik Athletic 0-1 Blackburn United
Three minutes into the half and Penicuik equalised when SOMERVILLE dived in low to head home a Gay cross. On the hour mark, Gay curled in a free kick that Young almost got on to at the back post, but the ball went out for a goal kick. Two minutes later, the visitors restored their lead when McQUILLAN gathered the ball in from a goal kick, drove forward and his left foot strike from twenty yards gave Easton no chance. Then a Campbell effort went narrowly over the bar. At the other end, a Montgomery strike was tipped round the post by King. In the 75th minute, Campbell had a chance for Blackburn, but he blasted the ball over the bar. One minute later, a driving run across the box by substitute Scott set up McCallum, but his strike was tipped on to the crossbar by King. Penicuik were piling on the pressure again but efforts by Lough and MacDonald came to nothing. In the 88th minute, Blackburn broke from defence and McQuillan almost had his hat trick, but a fine save by Easton denied the big striker. Into injury time and King was again in action tipping a McCallum header over the bar. From the corner, King made his first mistake of the game when he tried to punch the ball clear but missed. However lady luck was on his side when ball bounced straight back into his hands.
