Penicuik started brightly but were dealt a hammer blow in the 3rd minute when defender Dougie Cunnison sliced his attempt at a clearance straight to Ben Antony who saw his shot brilliantly saved by keeper Bejaoui. The rebound fell to ADAMSON who coolly stroked the ball into the empty net. Minutes later, a neat passing move between McCallum and Patterson was foiled when Patterson’s low hard cross to the front post was blocked for a corner. Then a Penicuik free kick was partially cleared to the edge of the box from where Patterson volleyed the ball over the crossbar. In the 10th minute, a high ball out of defence caught out Penicuik and only a superb save by Bejaoui denied the visitors a second goal. Ten minutes later, Antony had a great chance, but his effort went narrowly over the bar. On the half hour, McCallum’s header off a corner kick was cleared off the goal line. As the ball was cleared to the edge of the box, Penicuik were awarded a free kick, but Jancyzk’s curling strike went wide of the goal. In the 33rd minute, following good work by McCulloch, Gay produced a spectacular scissors kick, but keeper Hall was well placed to save. The ball was immediately hit long from defence and was picked up by Adamson. He got past Young and only another tremendous one handed save by Bejaoui kept the score at 0-1. Just before half time, danger man Adamson was again in action beating two Penicuik defenders only to see his strike clip the top of the crossbar and away for a goal kick.
HALFTIME | Penicuik Athletic 0-1 Hill of Beath Hawthorn
Two minutes into the half and McCallum’s header off a Jancyzk cross went inches past the junction of the crossbar and post. Then a free kick to Hill of Beath was taken by Moffat, but it went narrowly wide of the post. Minutes later, a Jancyzk corner kick was headed powerfully by McCallum, but keeper Hall managed to beat the ball away when a goal seemed certain. The game was put to bed in the 54th minute when BRYCE latched on to the ball just inside the Penicuik half. He drove forward at pace leaving a trail of Penicuik defenders in his wake and from just inside the penalty box, blasted the ball past Bejaoui. A goal worthy of winning any game. Penicuik tried hard to get back into the game, but the visitors were sharper to the ball, closed Penicuik down quickly giving the home side little chance to settle. Penicuik were reduced to using the long ball and in the 77th minute this bore fruit when McCulloch had a chance, but his shot was deflected past the post for a corner kick. From the corner, Young headed the ball down into the six yard box, but as fate would have it, there were no Penicuik players there to take advantage. Two minutes into injury time and a final chance fell to Penicuik, but McCulloch’s strike was turned round the post by keeper Hall.
