Penicuik were inches away from the opening goal in the first minute when a shot by Barr flashed narrowly past the post. Immediately afterwards, keeper Bald and centre back Liddell combined to block Batchelor’s shot for a corner kick. In the 14th minute with Penicuik pressing hard, Somerville turned quickly in the box only to see his effort go wide of the goal. Four minutes later, a Coyne shot come cross was stroked into the back of the net by Kelbie, but was ruled offside by the stand side assistant. Then Bald pulled off an excellent save from a long range strike. Linlithgow started to apply pressure on the Penicuik defence and a free kick on the edge of the right side of the penalty area was glanced away for a corner. From the corner, Shirra saw his lob dip over the crossbar. At the other end, Lough had a chance but blasted the ball high and wide of the target. On the half hour, a Jancyzk corner kick beat everyone but bounced off the top of the crossbar. Minutes later, a fine run by Lough, beating three defenders ended with a strike that curled over the bar. In the 41st minute a Penicuik corner kick was headed net bound by Jancyzk, but it struck the back of Young’s head and over the bar for a goal kick.
HALFTIME | Penicuik Athletic 0-0 Linlithgow Rose
Linlithgow upped the pace of their game in the second half and had the ball in the back of the net within 35 seconds, but Batchelor was ruled offside. Four minutes later, a slick move down the right by the Rose saw the ball flash across the six yard box, but there were no takers for Linlithgow. Baptie returned the ball back into the box where Strickland volleyed the ball into the ground and saw it bounce over the bar. In the 59th minute, a Jancyzk free kick was well held by keeper Adams. On the hour mark, with Penicuik’s goal under siege, Strickland had the ball in the net, but was again ruled offside. The visitors finally took the lead in the 73rd minute when McLennan’s pin point cross picked out KELVIE who slammed the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net. However, Penicuik refused to give up and in the 82nd minute, Somerville headed home what appeared to be the equaliser, but was ruled offside. Then Coyne came close to doubling the visitors lead but his effort skimmed the crossbar. In Linlithgow’s next attack, keeper Bald was relieved to see the ball go inches wide of his right hand post. Penicuik had one last chance in injury time when awarded a free kick, but the Rose defence held firm to take all three points.
