The opening minutes were evenly contested but it was the home side who opened the scoring when a stunning 25 yard volley by O’KANE gave Easton no chance. Three minutes later, with Penicuik slow to clear the ball they had Easton to thank when he got down quickly to save. In the 18th minute, a great run down the right wing by Moffat came to nothing when Easton tipped his cross over the bar. At the other end, strong goal keeping by Renton saw him punch the ball clear leaving two players requiring attention from their respective physios. On the half hour, a pinpoint cross by Gay picked out McCallum. He headed the ball down to Somerville, but his effort went wide of the goal. Immediately afterwards, Somerville had a gilt edge chance to equalise when, just outside the box, he dispossessed a defender but keeper Renton pulled off a great save to deny the striker. However Penicuik were not to be denied and in the 33rd minute McCALLUM’s first time strike off a Jancyzk corner kick levelled the score. However, Musselburgh restored their lead five minutes later when a quick break from defence and some neat first time passing saw KING slip the ball past Easton. Shortly afterwards, a Musselburgh free kick eluded everyone and slid narrowly past the far post.
HALFTIME | Musselburgh Athletic 2-1 Penicuik Athletic
Two minutes into the second half and Gay burst into the penalty box, appeared to have been tripped, but was booked for diving. Then, following a corner to Musselburgh, Easton needed to attempts to save a powerful strike from the edge of the penalty box. In the 59th minute, a long range strike by Musselburgh went just wide of the target. Minutes later, Spowart saw his diving header go inches past the post. Penicuik started to work their way into the game and Barr had a great chance, but his header went straight into the arms of Renton. In the 78th minute, a fine move by Penicuik saw Jancyzk get round the back of the defence and his cross into the box was blocked but fell to K Scott who saw his effort brilliantly saved by Renton. Three minutes later, a Penicuik corner kick was punched away by Renton, but McCallum laid the ball back to HUME who slammed home a deserved equaliser. Then another quick break by Musselburgh saw Thomson one on one with Easton, but the winger’s strike hit Easton in the face and went out for a throw in. In the 89th minute, Moffat got past three Penicuik defenders, crossed the ball to Thomson, but this time his shot hit the upright and was cleared. Penicuik were pressing hard now and got the winner in the 91st minute when Jancyzk’s cross to the back post was headed back across goal by Gay and K SCOTT pounced to slot the ball home.
