Penicuik travelled to Perth for this penultimate league game for both teams, and despite some atrocious weather conditions both sides served up an excellent game of football for the few rain soaked fans who ventured out on a miserable day. Kinnoull almost took the lead in the 5th minute when a long ball caught out the Penicuik defence, but keeper Livie pulled off an excellent save. Two minutes later, Barr came close for Penicuik when his long range strike flew over the crossbar. Then Barr set up Moonie only to see his left foot strike flash past Bruce’s left hand post. In the 15th minute, following a clever lay off by Cole, Barr’s chip was well saved by Bruce.
On the half hour, Kinnoull attacked up the left wing, but Holden’s header looped high over the bar. At the other end, a Montgomery corner kick was met by Cowan, but with keeper Bruce stranded, Cowan’s header went narrowly past the upright. Both sides were producing some excellent lead up play, but failed to produce the telling pass in the last third of the pitch. In the 40th minute, following a throw in to Penicuik, Montgomery struck a waist high cross to the front post where keeper Bruce just got in ahead of the in rushing Cole to save.
HALFTIME | Kinnoull 0-0 Penicuik Athletic
Six minutes into the half and Kinnoull won a corner on the left. From the corner, Milne headed the ball clear, but it fell to McAllister. His powerful shot was heading goalwards, but struck one of his own players and was deflected high over the bar. In the 54th minute, Penicuik were unlucky not to take the lead when a Cole shot beat keeper Bruce, but crashed back off the base of the upright and was cleared. Six minutes later, keeper Livie was the hero when he was at full stretch to tip away a net bound Kelly header. Then, in Penicuik’s next attack, Barr played a delightful ball over the top of the Kinnoull defence, but Bruce was alert to rush out and deny Moonie.
In the 65th minute, Cowan was at full stretch to cut out a dangerous Gray cross for a corner. Shortly afterwards, in Penicuik’s best move of the match, a quick break from defence saw substitute Jones and Moonie interchange passes and set up Jones, but his shot was saved by Bruce at the second attempt. In the 75th minute, following a free kick to Kinnoull, Livie blocked a Kelly header, but the rebound was blasted high and wide of the target. Minutes later, Livie was again in action pulling off a double save to keep a clean sheet. Penicuik took the lead in the 84th minute when a low driven cross by Montgomery was struck first time but blocked by Bruce. The rebound fell to BARR who slotted the ball past three defenders on the goal line. In the 87th minute Penicuik should have finished off the tie when Jones set up Killin, but with only Bruce to beat Gunnion pulled off a superb tackle to clear the danger.
