Penicuik travelled to Perth for this opening league match of the new season against newly promoted Jeanfield Swifts. The game started briskly with Penicuik passing and retaining the ball well and in the 13th minute Penicuik opened the scoring in the 13th minute when McCALLUM latched on to a clever Jancyzk free kick to score the first of his hat trick. Eight minutes later McCALLUM doubled Penicuik’s lead when, again, he was first to the ball glancing home a header off a corner kick. Penicuik continued to dominate the game until the last ten minutes of the half when a hard working Jeanfield side got back into the game but Penicuik defended well to hold their two goal lead at half time.
HALFTIME | Jeanfield Swifts 0-2 Penicuik Athletic
From the start of the second half, Jeanfield upped their game and their hard work paid off when they pulled a goal back in the 61st minute with a FOWLER strike. Penicuik manager Harvey then made a double substitution and gradually Penicuik overcame the Swifts pressure to again get control of the game. Then, following some neat passing, McCALLUM completed his hat trick in the 71st minute with a header off a Kyle Scott cross. However in the process of scoring he suffered a badly cut eye and took no further part in the game. The home side were far from finished and ANDERSON wrestled Young out of the way to score with a looping header in the 80th minute. The final ten minutes were well defended by Penicuik and earned three important points in the opening game of the season.
