The home side started strongly pushing hard for the early goal and in the 11th minute the first real chance of the game fell their way when a cut back from the Penicuik bye line was blasted high over the bar from the edge of the box. Then at the other end a surging run by new signing Paliczka saw him drive past three defenders and set up Roxburgh, but keeper Bruce rushed from goal to smother the ball. Minutes later, a high curling Jeanfield free kick to the back post was headed narrowly past Haldane's right hand post. In the 20th minute another dangerous cross from the left by Jeanfield was superbly cut out by McDermott. Immediately afterwards, Penicuik attacked down the left where Knight left two defenders in is wake only to see his right foot strike tipped over the crossbar by Bruce. On the half hour a long ball caught out the Penicuik defence but Haldane blocked the first shot and the strike from the rebound was again blocked and the danger cleared. Penicuik took the lead in the 35th minute, when McDermott drove at the Swifts defence and slipped the ball inside the full back. ROXBURGH ran in behind the defence and drove the ball under Bruce into the net. Two minutes later, Penicuik doubled their lead when a neat move down the right by McPartlin saw him pass the ball to Roxburgh in the box. He laid the ball off into the path of PALICZKA who fairly blasted the ball into the roof of the net. In the 40th minute, Haldane came to Penicuik's rescue when he pulled off a great two handed block to deny Anderson.

HALFTIME | Jeanfield Swifts 0-2 Penicuik Athletic

Three minutes into the half, and Roxburgh set Millar free on the keeper only to be pulled up for a very dubious offside decision by the stand side assistant referee. Then, following a free kick to Penicuik, the ball was headed back across goal where Knight rose above the defence, but Bruce was well placed to save. In the 56th minute, a long distance wind assisted strike by Gordon whistled just wide of Haldane's right hand post. Jeanfield were pressing hard and with the strong wind making it difficult for the Penicuik defence, it was no surprise when the home side pulled a goal back in the 63rd minute. They attacked down the left wing, and Haldane was at full stretch to fingertip away the strike on goal. Unfortunately for him the ball fell to substitute DEANE who had an easy task to slot the ball into the net from close range. Then a great chance for the equaliser fell to Anderson, but he couldn't direct his header on target. The home side were not to be denied and the equaliser came in their next attack when a weak tackle at the edge of the Penicuik box allowed G ANDERSON the opportunity to drive the ball into the bottom corner of the net. In the 72nd minute, Haldane did well to save two attempts on goal at the expense of a corner. In the final minutes of the game both sides had chances to take all three points, but good defending by both sides meant that points were shared on the opening league tie of the season.
