Penicuik started brightly with Jeanfield keeper Bruce brought into action to cut out a dangerous cross into the six yard box. In the 5th minute the opening chance fell to McCallum but he dragged his shot wide of the upright. Then in the 11th minute McCallum was one on one with keeper Bruce who did exceptionally well to block the striker’s shot and the danger was cleared. In the 17th minute a neat reverse pass by Anton set Smith free but he was ruled offside as Bejaoui rushed out to block the shot. Minutes later, Smith beat the offside trap only to see Meikle stretch out a leg to block the strike on goal. At the other end Ross, who was set free by Barr, had to attempts on goal, the first of which was blocked and the second went well wide of the target. In Penicuik’s next attack, a defence splitting pass by McPartlin set up Killin, but keeper Bruce pulled off an excellent save and the danger was cleared. Minutes later, Jeanfield came close to scoring from a free kick, but with ball bouncing about the box, it was the defence who came out on top and the ball was booted clear. Just before half time, Barr had a chance, but dragged his shot just wide of the goal.

HALFTIME | Jeanfield Swifts 0-0 Penicuik Athletic

With both sides looking for the opening goal, the game swung from end to end but neither side was able to get past two strong defences. In the 60th minute, a Penicuik corner kick was headed goalwards by Meikle, but keeper Bruce punched the ball away and it fell to Cunnison on the edge of the box, but his first time volley went high and wide of the target. Three minutes later, Penicuik lost possession in their own half but fortunately for them the shot on goal went straight at Bejaoui. At the other end a McPartlin shot was well saved by Bruce. From the clearance, Jeanfield broke quickly and Bejaoui pulled off a magnificent one handed reaction save when the shot on goal took a wicked deflection. Three minutes later, Holden turned his marker just outside the Penicuik box and Bejaoui looked on anxiously as the ball flashed past his right hand post. In the 69th minute a great cross into the Jeanfield box by Killin was cut out by a diving header for a corner kick. Play continued to swing from end to end and when it looked like the game was going to end goalless, joy for Jeanfield in the 89th minute. They were awarded a soft free kick that was headed wide of the goal, but for some reason Lister decided to hook the ball away instead of letting it go out for a goal kick. The ball fell to McMANUS on the edge of the box and he blasted the ball into the top corner of the net to earn all three points for the home side. A game in which Penicuik failed to convert their chances and came to regret it.
