Penicuik travelled to Kiers Park for this East Super League match against Hill of Beath Hawthorn and immediately found themselves under pressure from the pace of Adamson on the right wing. The home side went ahead in the 8th minute when Adamson attacked up the right, cut the ball back to Moffat and HAY headed home his cross. Penicuik gradually got back into the game and a Barr strike went just wide of the target. In the 18th minute, Penicuik had a strong claim for a penalty when the ball was handled in the box, but it went unseen by the referee. Ten minutes later, Smith had a chance for the Haws, but his effort went well wide of the goal. Then a Jancyzk free kick was deflected by the Haws defence, but keeper Hall scrambled across his goal line to save. Penicuik were exerting strong pressure on the home defence and half chance fell to Somerville but his first time volley flew high and wide of the goal. With minutes to go in the half, a Lough header went inches over the bar with keeper Hall beaten. Penicuik’s best chance of the game fell to McCallum, but his header off a pin point cross by Ross went narrowly past the upright. Despite all their possession and pressure, Penicuik could not breach a solid Haws defence.
HALFTIME | Hill of Beath Hawthorn 1-0 Penicuik Athletic
Hill of Beath started the second half at pace and Penicuik could easily have gone three behind in the opening five minutes. However, a tremendous instinctive one handed save by Bejaoui tipped a close range header over the bar and from the corner the woodwork came to the rescue when a header crashed back off the crossbar and the danger cleared. Once again Adamson was causing Penicuik problems with his pace and he left players in his wake only to see his shot go narrowly past the post. Penicuik gradually worked their way back into the game again and a Lough strike beat the defence, but keeper Hall was well placed to save. Penicuik dominated possession, but for some reason repeatedly played route one football and the tall solid Haws defence had no problem dealing with all the high balls into the box. In the 60th minute, Devlin picked out Ross on the right. He drove in on goal, crossed the ball low along the box and Somerville was inches away from getting a boot to the ball. Immediately afterwards, Lough again struck for goal, but Hall saved comfortably. With Penicuik pushing hard for the equaliser, they were caught on the break when they lost possession in the middle of the park. McKenzie set up McCrindle, but he blasted the ball high over the bar. Then a Lough strike was deflected past the post for a corner. From the corner, the home side broke quickly from defence and only a timely tackle saved the day. Penicuik continued to press, but the predictable high balls into the danger area were comfortably dealt with by a stalwart solid defence.
