Glenrothes went on the attack in the opening minute and came close with a shot that went inches wide of Hill’s right hand post. Two minutes later, Ross lost possession just outside his own penalty area, but fortunately for him the strike on goal lacked power and was easily gathered by Hill. At the other end Harris saw his shot off a Killin cross go over the crossbar. In the 10th minute, Hill rushed from goal to smother the ball after Simpson wriggled his way past the Penicuik defence. Then a swift attack by Penicuik down the right saw Ross swing the ball into the box where Harris got his head to the ball but keeper Smith did well to tip the ball over the bar. Shortly afterwards a Simpson free kick just outside the Penicuik box was gathered at the second attempt by Hill. In the 23rd minute, Martin dispossessed Young only to see his shot blocked by Cunnison and cleared. Immediately afterwards, a deflected shot by Napier was well saved by Hill. On the half hour, McPartlin was denied by keeper Smith who, at full stretch, tipped his header over the bar. Penicuik should have taken the lead in the 37th minute when awarded a penalty kick, but Cunnison’s spot kick flew over the bar. Just before half time, a long diagonal pass by Gay picked out Ross on the right wing but his cross into the box was headed over by Millar. In the dying seconds of the half, a ball over the top of the Glenrothes defence set Millar free, but Smith rushed from goal to block the striker’s shot and the danger was cleared.
HALFTIME | Glenrothes 0-0 Penicuik Athletic
37 seconds into the half and a total mix up between Hill and Ross allowed SIMPSON to nip in and score the opening goal. In the 54th minute, a neat passing move culminated with Montgomery going for goal with a left foot shot that went well wide of the target. Minutes later, Martin came close with a strike that flashed past the far post. In their next attack, Glenrothes should have doubled their lead when Simpson volleyed the ball wide of the goal when it seemed easier to score. In the 62nd minute, Glenrothes substitute Griffin’s strike swerved narrowly past Hill’s left hand post. Two minutes later a throw in to Glenrothes was picked up by THOMSON who turned and smashed an unstoppable shot past Hill from twenty yards. In the 72nd minute, a long range by Napier went just wide of the target. Penicuik were struggling to get into the game with only a McCulloch strike causing problems for the home defence. Then another Simpson free kick was turned round the post for a corner kick. From the corner, without knowing too much about it, the ball came off Hill for another corner kick. This time the corner was poorly defended and PEARSON was on hand to head the ball home from close range. In the 78th minute, a driving run by Napier saw him go past four Penicuik defenders and lay the ball off inside, but the strike on goal sailed high over the bar. The home side almost added a fourth goal when the ball was crossed to the back post where substitute Griffin was inches away from tapping the ball home.
