Penicuik travelled to Warout Park for this 1st round of the East of Scotland Cup. The first chance fell to Penicuik in the 8th minute when Somerville appeared to be fouled but advantage was allowed only to see McCallum’s effort sail high over he bar. Minutes later, Penicuik were piling on the pressure and saw three strikes blocked inside the penalty box before the danger was cleared. Then a great run by Ross set up Somerville, but just as he was about to shoot Wallace booted the ball away for a corner. From the corner, keeper Small flapped at the ball and finally gathered it at the third attempt. In the 19th minute a diving header by Bruce went narrowly past the upright. In their next attack, a cross by Barr eluded keeper Small, but hit the top of the crossbar and out for a goal kick. Then in the 30th minute, a Glenrothes corner kick was headed clear, crossed back in and WALLACE slotted the ball home from a tight angle. Minutes later, Barr lost possession just outside his penalty box, but Bejaoui dealt comfortably with the attempted lob. In the 42nd minute, Barr got round the back of the Glenrothes defence to set up SOMERVILLE who slammed the ball home.
HALFTIME | Glenrothes 1-1 Penicuik Athletic
From the restart, Somerville came close with a shot that went inches wide of the target. With the pressure building, Penicuik took the lead in the 53rd minute when McCALLUM bravely headed home a Jancyzk cross, suffering a head knock in the process. Penicuik then had a great chance to increase their lead, but a last gasp tackle denied Jancyzk just as he was about to shoot. However, in the 66th minute, consecutive corners to Penicuik saw the ball headed off the goal line, but ROSS pounced to head home the rebound. Three minutes later, a dangerous cross into the Glenrothes box was punched away by keeper Small. The ball fell to Somerville on the edge of the box, but his first time volley flashed inches over the bar. In the 82nd minute, Glenrothes broke quickly from defence and Scarborough saw his powerful shot brilliantly saved by Bejaoui. The rebound was knocked into the net at the far post but was ruled offside. Two minutes later, a mistake by Jackson saw him dispossessed by McCALLUM who took full advantage and stroked the ball past Small into the bottom corner of the net. One minute into injury time and a strike by Barr went inches over the bar.
