Saturday saw a historic appearance for our longest serving player, Darrell Young, as his 312th appearance in a Penicuik shirt saw him move above Ryan Gay as the man with the most appearances for Penicuik Athletic in the modern era.
The man affectionally known as 'Dawson' for his apparent likeness to former Spurs defender Michael Dawson, joined Penicuik Athletic prior to the 2013-14 season from Bonnyrigg Rose 'A' U21s. He made his debut in an opening day defeat to Kirriemuir Thistle but recovered quickly to establish himself
alongside Dougie Cunnison at the heart of our Premier League title winning defence, making thirty-four appearances, scoring three times, including his only double in a 3-0 win at Pumpherston.
His first season in the Super League saw a further thirty-one appearances and his best goalscoring season to date, as he chipped in with five goals.
Season 2015-16 saw another piece of silverware added, as Penicuik shocked Super League Champions Bonnyrigg Rose 3-1 in the Fife & Lothians Cup Final at Olivebank, a game in which Dawson scored his only goal of the season, what a time to get it!
The following season saw Dawson form a formidble partnership with new defensive partner Craig Hume, making thirty-eight appearances, scoring four times as he helped Penicuik to their highest league finish in over twenty-five years.
They went one better the next year as they bettered the highest league finish and also won the East of Scotland Cup for the third time, thanks to a man of the match performance from Dawson in the 2-0 win against Tranent Juniors at Prestonfield.
The move to senior football in 2018/19 didn't stop Dawson racking up the games, as he made another thirty-six appearances and played his part in the Conference 'A' win which sealed our place in the Premier Division.
The 'COVID' seasons saw Dawson contribute to our run to the Scottish Cup 3rd Round
against Partick Thistle, and becoming the first seasons in which Dawson didn't notch a goal.
Season 2021/22 saw Dawson surpass 250 appearances as Penicuik pushed Tranent all
the way to the last day of the league season and last season saw him hit the milestone of
300 games against Linlithgow in May.
So far, Dawson has now played 312 times for Penicuik, scored 21 goals and assisted 15
times.
Congratulations Darrell 'Dawson' Young, well deserved.
