Manager Meikle made four changes including leaving himself out of the side that kept a clean sheet at Kelty in the Fife & Lothians Semi Final for this dress rehearsal for the final scheduled for 8 June. Prior to the kick off the Penicuik team provided a guard of honour to Champions Bonnyrigg, and were joined by the home side as their retiring captain Ross Archibald took to the park. The match started at a lively pace with both sides having early chances as first a Gay free kick for the visitors was headed over by McCallum and the striker had another chance a minute later when he latched onto a long ball but Rooney got a hand to his effort to thwart him. Bonnyrigg were testing Penicuik from long range and McGachie was the first to try in four minutes when he forced Bejaoui into a save and with ten minutes on the clock Kidd’s shot from 20 yards was held by the big Penicuik keeper. The game erupted in the 16th minute as McCallum appeared to catch Moyes with an elbow as they jumped for a high ball and referee Stuart showed McCallum the yellow card. Three minutes later a Bonnyrigg corner fell to Hoskins but he fired wide and with 25 minutes gone Bejaoui saved at close range from Moyes. On the half hour Kidd’s shot from the edge of the box was saved by Bejaoui before McCallum and Moyes clashed again in jumping for a high ball and referee Stuart had no hesitation in showing the visitors striker a second yellow followed by a red card.Penicuik reshuffled with Lough going up top and Thomson wide left but it was the home side who threatened again as Stewart forced a diving save from Bejaoui in the 35th minute.
HALFTIME | Bonnyrigg Rose 1-0 Penicuik Athletic
The home side started the second half strongly and went ahead on 50 minutes as NELSON drove home from 15 yards out and five minutes later added a second from the penalty spot through ARCHIBALD after White tripped McGachie in the box. It was one way traffic towards the Penicuik goal and Bejaoui again stood firm in the 57th minute with a great save from McGachie but Bonnyrigg added a third five minutes later as MCINTOSH dribbled past two defenders before slotting past Bejaoui from close range. Kidd forced another save from Bejaoui after 65 minutes before both side made substitutions and the loudest cheer of the day was for the departing Archibald. Penicuik made a rare foray into Bonnyrigg territory in 75 minutes but Lough’s shot was high and wide before Tobin and McLaren both fired wide for the home side. The home side made it four in the 81st minutes as TOBIN lobbed the despairing Bejaoui from 20 yards out. The home side looked to extend their lead against a tiring Penicuik side who despite listing five substitutes had made only one change and again it was Bejaoui to the rescue firstly making a top class save from a Donaldson header in the 83rd minute and again two minutes later from a shot by the same player. There were two minutes left when Penicuik finally forced a second half save from the home keeper Rooney as Conor Thomson’s shot from 22 yards was held at the post.Referee Stuart blew the whistle to end Bonnyrigg’s successful league season whilst Penicuik have two games remaining at home to Camelon and Carnoustie before the sides clash again on 8 June in the Conservatory Convertors Fife & Lothians Cup.
